Keys to Seaweeds of the Pacific Coast of North America
by Paul W. Gabrielson, Thomas B. Widdowson & Sandra C.
Lindstrom
ABSTRACT
This publication is a revision of the “Keys to the Benthic
Marine Algae and Seagrasses of British Columbia, Southeast Alaska,
Washington and Oregon” (Gabrielson et al. 2000). As was
true in the previous edition, there have been name changes to many
of the common seaweed genera and species found along the shores
covered by this publication, e.g. Ulva in the green algae,
Laminaria in the brown algae and Mazzaella in the
red algae. Major changes in this new edition are: 1)
significant revision of many of the species keys, especially in the
green and red algae, and 2) the updating of names of all taxa as of
May, 2006. The following new combinations are proposed:
in the green algae, Acrochaete apiculata (Setchell et
N.L. Gardner) O'Kelly comb. nov.,
Acrochaete cingens (Setchell et N.L. Gardner) O'Kelly comb.
nov., Acrochaete codicola (Setchell et N.L. Gardner)
O'Kelly comb. nov., Acrochaete flustrae (Reinke) O'Kelly
comb. nov., Acrochaete taylorii (Thivy) O'Kelly comb. nov.,
in the brown algae, Saccharina subsimplex (Setchell et N.L.
Gardner) Widdowson, S.C. Lindstrom et P.W. Gabrielson comb. nov.,
and in the red algae, Colaconema erythrophyllum (C.C. Jao)
P.W. Gabrielson comb. nov.
