Fucus spiralis Linnaeus

Fucus spiralis

Description: Spiralled Wrack, Fucus spiralis, is the uppermost species of Fucus that occurs on the shore. The frond lacks bladders (Fucus vesiculosus) and does not have a serrated edge (Fucus serratus); it is sometimes spiralled. However, the defining character is a sterile rim around the receptacles. Beware, however, many hybrids, particularly with Fucus vesiculosus, which are often found on disturbed or recently disturbed shores.
