Apoglossum ruscifolium (Turner) J. Agardh, 1898
Common name: Veined Tongue Weed
Description: Membranous, tufted, bright red fronds, to
100 mm long. Frond with conspicuous midrib and wavy margin, to 6
mm wide, repeatedly branched from midrib, apices blunt. Numerous
microscopic veins, at wide angle from midrib.
Habitat: On rock and epiphytic (particularly on Laminaria hyperborea, lower intertidal and
subtidal, widely distributed, occasional.
Distribution: Widely distributed in Britain and Ireland but most common on western and southern shores.
Notes: Apoglossocolax pusilla Maggs et Hommersand,
a minute parasite to 2 mm in diameter, very rarely (Dorset in
England; Galway in Ireland; northern Spain) occurs on this
species.
