Common name: Elongate Coral Weed
Description: Chalky whitish-pink to reddish-lilac,
calcified, limp, articulated, elegant fronds, regular fish-bone-like arrangement,
to 50 mm high, axis compressed, repeatedly pinnate from discoid
base, more abundantly and regularly branched than
C. officinalis. Articulations small (0.5-2 mm broad).
Habitat: On rock, wave-exposed coasts, lower intertidal. Often on mussels on exposed coasts
Distribution: Southern and western coasts of Britain and Ireland, occasional; probably under-recorded.
.South to Mauritania. Mediterranean. Black Sea. Records from the southern parts of the range may be other species.
Similar species:
Corallina officinalis
is commoner, larger, and has coarser articulations. Jania rubens which is
dichotomously branched.
