Rhodophyllis irvineorum Guiry, Maggs & Bunker

Alternative names: Great Rose Weed
Description: Thallus to 80 mm long and to (5-) 15-20 (-30) mm wide; rose-red to tawny-red; cystocarps marginal in proliferations; tetrasporangia in small marginal sori, tetraspores sequentially developed and zonately arranged.
Type locality: St John’s Point, Co. Donegal, Ireland.
Habitat: Exclusively in the subtidal growing on rock from 25-40 m.
Distribution: In Ireland: Cos Antrim, Donegal, Mayo, Galway, Kerry, Cork, Waterford,
Wexford; In Britain: Pembrokeshire, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Hampshire. Channel Islands. Probably widespread in clear waters of NE Atlantic.
Eponymy: Named to honour Linda Mary Irvine and David Edward Guthrie Irvine (1924-
1995), British phycologists.
