Solieria chordalis (C.Agardh) J.Agardh
Common name: Solier's Red String Weed.
Description: Plants firm and cartilaginous,
bright red, to 200 mm long; fronds initiallyirregularly
dichotomous with with many seemingly adventitious laterals
giving the thallus an irregularly pinnate appearance. Fronds
narrowing at the point of attachment; cylindrical or slightly
compressed.
Habitat: On rocks, stones and pebbles.
Generally found in wave-sheltered habitats where silt
accumulates but favouring situations with some current movement
Distribution: currently unknown in Ireland; in
Britain where it it is likely to have been introduced as it is only
known since 1976, it is known from a few localities in
Pembrokeshire, Cornwall, and Dorset. Extending south to Morocco and
the Canary Islands.
Records from elsewhere are unlikley to be correct.
Similar species: Gracilaria gracilis and
Cystoclonium purpureum.
